Donner Train Tunnels
Here at Donner Ski Ranch, we believe adventure should last all year long. When the snow melts, we invite you to explore one of the region's most fascinating historical sites, the famous Donner Pass Train Tunnels, just across the road from our main parking lot.
Hike through these historic, abandoned railroad tunnels and snowsheds to experience an incredible piece of California history. Built by Chinese laborers in the 1860s, these tunnels were a monumental achievement of the Transcontinental Railroad. As you explore, you'll see a mix of graffiti art and natural light filtering through the openings, offering stunning, one-of-a-kind views of Donner Lake and the surrounding valley.
It's a unique and easy hike for families and history buffs alike. Just be sure to wear sturdy shoes for the uneven, rocky ground and bring a flashlight or headlamp for the darkest sections. We can't wait to see you on the trails!
Chinese Catfish Pond
The Donner Summit Lakes Trail begins with an easy, gradual climb to Angela Lake. Just before the lake, a side trail leads east to the Chinese Catfish Pond, a shallow body of water isolated from any feeder streams. This enjoyable trail is suitable for most children and hikers of all skill levels. From the Donner Pass Road Trailhead, you can also access the Pacific Crest Trail.
Angela, Flora, and Azalea Lakes
During the summer, you can tour some of the best swimming holes in the Donner area along this trail (note: swimming is not permitted in Lake Angela). In the winter, you'll find the first part of this route at a busy ski resort. Because of this, it's best to hike this route in the summer. The trail to Lake Angela can also be easy to miss, so we suggest you download a map ahead of time and keep your eye on it.
Mount Judah Loop Trail
Just a stone's throw from the Ranch, the spectacular Mount Judah Loop Trail invites you to hike above our beautiful landscape. Your journey begins right here at the Donner Pass trailhead, where you'll start your ascent along the famous Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). As you climb, you'll feel the day's excitement build, especially as the trail leads you toward Donner Summit and Donner Peak.
Along the way, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking views of Donner Lake from open ledges—a perfect spot to rest and take it all in. Continuing your adventure clockwise, you'll traverse Mount Judah and pass sections of the historic emigrant wagon trail, a true step back in time. Finally, you'll reconnect with the PCT, bringing you back to where you started, filled with incredible memories and stunning photos.
Dutch Flat Donner Lake Wagon Road
Get ready to experience the high alpine beauty of our backyard! This loop trail, which you can easily access from Donner Pass Road, will lead you through a stunning landscape of granite and forest. You'll make your way over exposed granite slabs toward Donner Pass before descending into the shelter of the forest. The loop brings you back around, and you'll find yourself back at your starting point.
Because much of this route is exposed to the elements, we recommend you plan your adventure for a day with clear weather. You won't want to miss a single moment of the breathtaking scenery, so be sure to check the forecast and prepare for a memorable hike.
