Historic Donner Pass Road Bike Ride
The Historic Donner Pass Road Bike Ride begins at the intersection with Frates Lane in Truckee, passing Donner Memorial State Park and following the north shore of Donner Lake with dedicated bike lanes. Riders should be aware of increased activity from motorists and pedestrians in July and August, especially near West End Beach Park, before facing a five-mile climb to the summit with no shoulders, shared with touring motorists, offering stunning views and photo opportunities of Donner Lake, the valley, and the iconic arched bridge, followed by a potentially fast descent.
Mountain Biker
Hole in the Ground
This trail is a classic for Tahoe mountain bikers, a challenging but incredibly scenic route through alpine forests and past beautiful lakes. It's also a fantastic trail for hikers and trail runners, especially when the wildflowers are in bloom.
Note for 2025: Due to construction along I-80 and the lack of a formal right-of-way connecting I-80 and U.S. 40, land managers urge cyclists to ride this trail as an out-and-back this year. The traditional loop that includes a section on the Pacific Crest Trail is closed to bicycles.
Difficulty: A True Challenge
This trail is challenging. It is a strenuous ride for mountain bikers and highly demanding for hikers, given its length, high altitude, and limited exit options. Be prepared and plan your trip accordingly.
