Manager of Resort Operations - Donner Ski Ranch
Location: Donner Summit, California
Position: Full-Time, Year-Round
Job Summary
The Manager of Operations at Donner Ski Ranch is a dynamic, hands-on leadership role responsible for overseeing the daily operations of a small ski resort. This position requires a versatile leader who can manage multiple departments, ensure exceptional guest experiences, and maintain operational efficiency. While the Manager of Operations is expected to actively contribute to tasks across all areas of the resort, a key responsibility is to recruit, hire, and train staff to delegate and fulfill these duties effectively. The Manager will work closely with the Owners, General Manager, and staff to support all aspects of resort operations, from administrative tasks to customer service, human resources, marketing, and facility maintenance. Donner Ski Ranch has subsidized local housing available for this position.
Key Responsibilities
Administrative
Answer phones, respond to emails, and manage social media messages promptly and professionally, while training staff to assist with these tasks.
Perform general administrative tasks, including maintaining and updating employee records, and delegate routine tasks to administrative staff.
Reconcile daily financial totals, balance cash drawers, ensure accurate reporting, and train staff to support financial processes.
Prepare reports for Owners and General Manager on operational performance and issues.
Customer Service
Address and resolve customer inquiries and issues quickly, calmly, and professionally, while training staff to handle routine guest interactions.
Act as a liaison between Owners, Managers, staff, and guests to ensure clear communication and a positive experience.
Monitor guest feedback and implement improvements to enhance customer satisfaction, delegating follow-up tasks to appropriate staff.
Human Resources
Recruit, interview, hire, train, support, discipline, and terminate staff across all departments to build a capable team to fulfill operational needs.
Create and manage weekly staff schedules, ensuring adequate coverage and adherence to schedules, and train staff to assist with scheduling tasks.
Monitor timekeeping systems and punch cards to verify compliance with schedules.
Maintain open and consistent communication with Owners and General Manager regarding HR, staff, or housing issues.
Foster a positive and inclusive work environment, promoting teamwork and staff morale.
Marketing and Social Media
Develop and post daily content across all social media platforms to engage guests and promote resort activities, while training staff to assist with content creation.
Update the resort’s website with current information, including snow conditions, events, and promotions, and delegate routine updates to staff.
Manage listings on external platforms such as OpenSnow, ensuring accurate and timely updates.
Create graphics and promotional materials for marketing campaigns and special events, and train staff to support marketing efforts.
Collaborate with the marketing team to develop seasonal campaigns and promotional strategies.
Computer Systems
Manage Siriusware point-of-sale systems across multiple resort locations, troubleshooting and resolving issues in a time-sensitive manner, and train staff to operate and troubleshoot systems.
Oversee reservations for groups, ski school, and special events, ensuring accuracy and efficiency, and delegate reservation tasks to trained staff.
Maintain and update software systems to support operational needs.
Train staff on the use of reservation and sales systems to ensure smooth operations.
Food and Beverage (Cafe, Bar, and Grill)
Assist in developing menus, setting pricing, and selecting liquor inventory to meet guest preferences and profitability goals, while training staff to contribute to menu planning.
Monitor food and beverage sales, analyzing trends to optimize offerings.
Create and promote daily specials to enhance guest experience and drive revenue.
Ensure compliance with health, safety, and alcohol service regulations, and train staff to maintain compliance.
Retail Store
Assist in purchasing and pricing retail inventory, ensuring alignment with guest demand and resort branding, and train staff to manage inventory tasks.
Oversee the production and sale of custom merchandise, such as T-shirts, and delegate production tasks to staff.
Manage the resort’s online shop, including product listings, inventory updates, and order fulfillment, and train staff to support online operations.
Monitor retail sales and adjust strategies to maximize profitability.
Facility and Event Operations
Lead and assist with snow removal efforts around the lodge to ensure safe access for guests and staff, while training staff to assist with snow removal.
Support lift operations during peak times or staffing shortages, and ensure all staff are trained to assist when needed.
Oversee janitorial and building maintenance tasks to maintain a clean and functional facility, and delegate routine maintenance to staff.
Assist with planning and executing resort events, including setup, coordination, and breakdown, and train staff to support event operations.
Ensure all facilities comply with safety and regulatory standards.
Additional Duties
Collaborate with other departments to support resort-wide initiatives and special projects, delegating tasks to appropriate staff.
Conduct regular inspections of facilities and equipment to identify maintenance needs, and assign tasks to appropriate staff.
Participate in strategic planning to improve resort operations and guest experiences.
Perform other duties as assigned to support the overall success of the resort.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in business, hospitality, or a related field (preferred) or equivalent experience.
3+ years of experience in operations management, preferably in a resort, hospitality, or recreational setting.
Ski or Snowboard at an intermediate or above level.
Strong leadership and communication skills with the ability to recruit, train, and manage diverse teams.
Proficiency in point-of-sale systems (e.g., Siriusware), Microsoft Office, and social media platforms.
Experience with customer service, human resources, and marketing.
Ability to multitask, prioritize, and work in a fast-paced environment.
Knowledge of ski resort operations, including lift operations and snow removal, is a plus.
Flexibility to work weekends, holidays, and extended hours during peak seasons.
Physical Requirements
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical tasks such as snow removal and event setup.
Comfort working in outdoor environments in various weather conditions.
Ability to stand, walk, and move around the resort for extended periods.
Ski or Snowboard at an intermediate or above level.
